wasn't it suppsed to be extracted from a fresh pineal gland? that's how my memory is serving me right now and because of that i always assumed it was a tip of the hat to the lovely and challanging N, N - dimethyltryptamine (DMT) which is created endogenously in the human pineal gland during birth, death and other traumatic experiences. but as far as i know gnawing on a pineal gland is not the best way to introduce DMT to your system. Smile

on a similar note i'm curious to hear what you guys think Raoul Duke is supposed to be smoking in the film when he's sitting in the hotel room and hitting up a lightbulb. if you remember, he lights the light bulb and then the couch floats away into a kind of cloud of television snow. my feeling was always that it was either DMT (which is often times smoked in a 'crack pipe') or some crank. and if i was a betting man it would be DMT.

any other gueses? i think this requires a serious academic investigation at some point....

Vikingbrian

My, wife and I were discussing that while watching the movie the other night.

My thinking is it was either "Hash", or maybe "Smack". I don't remember Hunter ever talking about using Smack, but if you remember just before that scene in the movie he tells DR. GONZO ( in the throws of his acid rage) to "Smoke a joint, Drink a beer, shoot some Smack" Please man I just need to get some rest."

Just speculation.

I saw an interview with Terry Gilliam once where he confirmed that he Adrinochrome is fictional.

He said that some kid came up to him after seeing the film and was telling him all about the time he's taken Adrinochrome and the amazing high it had given him. Gilliam said he didn't have the heart to tell the kid he knew it was invented by HST.

well it IS real but doesn't have the full effect as desribed in F&L

here's the scientific explanation :

Chemistry:

Adrenochrome is synthesized in vivo by the oxidation of epinephrine. In vitro, Ag2O is used as an oxidizing agent (MacCarthy, Chim, Ind. Paris 55,435(1946))
optimum pH of water solution = 4

Psychedelic use :

There has been a substantial amount of controversy about whether adrenochrome can be classified as a hallucinogenic drug. Even though adrenochrome induces remarkable psychoactive effects, most researchers agree that an adrenochrome experience does not qualify as a psychedelic one. Psychoactive effects of adrenochrome include euphoria, confusion, changed train of thought, lack of judgment, poor insight and inability to concentrate. In one study, test subjects compared adrenochrome experience to mild psilocybin and LSD experiences.

From my understanding, it's used as a sort of dye...wikipedia describes it as a pigment for something...

Exclamation Evil or Very Mad Exclamation I watched a documentary with Fritz Springmeier about the Illuminati bloodlines and satanic cults which explained that Adrenochrome is extracted during human sacrifices from the base of the neck and spinal column (right before the person is killed they produce large amounts of adrenaline) and sold in extremely concentrated doses on the black market for a lot of money. It is a very potent drug when concentrated and administered properly. Can you imagine ingesting a concentrated form of this that came from dozens of human brains right before they were killed?!! EEKS!! I've also read that vampire's and blood drinking types of people like to drink human blood for the same reasons because right before someone dies they release high amounts of adrenaline into the the bloodstream and you can get a "high" from it, not that I would recommend it though. Evil or Very Mad Arrow Shocked

I'm not saying I agree with Fritz. It's just another angle to the mystery.

"Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry. infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar." --(spoof)
